Testing Before Leaving the Jobsite Reference
Why this matters
The leading cause of callback service: tech didn't test before leaving. Equipment that "should work" doesn't always. The tech who tests systematically catches problems on-site + saves the return trip + the customer's frustration. This is the field card.
Why testing matters
For customer:

Universal testing principles
Apply across trades:
- Test under operating conditions (not just "I plugged it in")
- Test against specification (manufacturer / customer expectation)
- Document the result (photo / written confirmation)
- Customer witness (when appropriate)
- Address any issue found before leaving
HVAC testing
After any HVAC service:
Cooling mode:
- Set thermostat to call for cooling
- Verify compressor starts
- Verify outdoor fan starts
- Verify indoor blower starts
- Measure return air temp
- Measure supply air temp
- Verify temperature differential (15-20°F typical)
- Listen for unusual sounds
Heating mode (if appropriate):
- Set thermostat to call for heating
- Verify ignition sequence
- Verify flame established (gas)
- Verify blower starts
- Measure supply air temp (130-140°F typical gas; 90-105°F heat pump)
- Verify proper venting (combustion analyzer if available)
- CO test if combustion equipment
Fan mode:
- Verify blower on / off properly
Condensate:
- Verify drainage path clear
- No water under unit
Run for 15+ minutes to verify steady-state operation.
Plumbing testing
After plumbing repair:
Pressure test:
- Turn water back on
- Inspect all connections (visual + touch for moisture)
- Run faucet at hot + cold
- Verify proper flow + pressure
- Check for drips at fitting
Drain test:
- Run water full flow into drain
- Verify drainage without backup
- Check for leaks at trap
- Verify vent function (no gurgling)
Toilet repair:
- Flush 2-3 times
- Verify fills + stops
- Check for leak at base, tank, supply line
- Verify proper handle operation
Water heater service:
- Verify heating
- Check temperature at output
- Test T+P valve (lift briefly)
- Check for leaks at all connections
Electrical testing
After electrical work:
Voltage:
- Verify proper voltage at outlet / switch / fixture
- Check polarity
- Confirm ground
Functionality:
- Switch operates
- Outlet powers test load (light, plug-in tester)
- Light fixture turns on
- GFCI tests + resets
Safety:
- AFCI / GFCI functional
- No exposed wiring

Code compliance:

Roofing testing
After roofing work:
Visual:

HVAC system commissioning
Beyond basic test, full commissioning:
- Static pressure measurement
- Refrigerant charge verification (subcooling / superheat)
- Combustion analysis (gas)
- Airflow at each register (balance)
- Thermostat programming
- Customer walkthrough
For new installations / major service.
Sound + observation
Beyond formal tests:
- Listen for unusual sounds
- Smell for anything off
- Watch indicators / displays
- Note anything that doesn't seem right
Sometimes intuition catches what tests don't.
Customer-witness testing
Show customer:
- "Let's test together"
- Run through the function with them
- Have them activate it
- Verify their understanding
Customer sees + remembers the equipment working correctly. Future call: "Was it working when [tech] left?"
Pre-departure checklist
Before driving away:
- All tools loaded (don't leave anything; can't return for it easily)
- Equipment / area clean (debris removed)
- Customer present + acknowledges work (signed work order)
- Payment processed (per policy)
- Documents provided (warranty, instructions)
- Final walk-through with customer
- Photo documentation complete
- Service record completed
Missing any = potential issue later.
When testing reveals additional problem
You may find something else:
- "I noticed this while testing your repair"
- Communicate to customer
- Provide estimate if they want it fixed
- Don't push hard (relationship more important than upsell)
If problem is in same scope: address it (warranty would have come back anyway).
Common testing mistakes
- "It worked when I left" without evidence
- Testing only briefly (not under real load)
- Skipping safety device verification
- Not testing all functions
- Skipping customer demonstration
- Not photographing operation
- Departing while issues remain
Trade-specific complete tests
HVAC: 15+ min runtime, all modes, all rooms Plumbing: All fixtures supplied / drained tested Electrical: All affected devices verified Roofing: Water test if possible OR monitor next rain Garage door: All safety + functions tested Appliance: Full cycle of operation Garbage disposal: Run with water for 30+ seconds
Documenting test results
Photo evidence:
- Pre-work condition
- Work being done
- Post-work testing (showing equipment running)
- Final / cleaned condition
Written notes:
- Test results (specific values)
- Customer present
- Any observations
This is your "proof of completion."
When customer questions later
A week out, the call comes: "it's doing it again," or "it never worked right after you left." How that call goes was decided before you pulled out of the driveway.
Go to the record first, quietly. Pull the readings, the photos, and the note that the customer watched it run. Do not lead with it. Lead with listening, because a real second failure and a misremembered one sound identical on the phone.
Separate three different claims. The work failed again (a real recurrence, often a different root cause). The work was never right (your test proves otherwise, or it does not). Something unrelated broke and it feels connected because you were the last one there. Ask enough questions to know which one you are dealing with before you dispatch or argue.
If the record shows it worked and the customer disagrees, show them, do not tell them. "Here's the supply and return temperatures I measured, and here's the photo of the unit running with you standing there." Most disputes end there, not because the customer was lying but because they genuinely did not remember.
If the record is thin, eat it. No test result, no photo, no witness, means you cannot prove the work was complete. Go back, make it right, and treat the gap as the lesson. Arguing from memory against a paying customer is a fight you lose even when you win.
Distinguish warranty from new work in writing, at the door, before you start. "The part I installed is covered. If it turns out the problem is the control board, that's a separate repair and I'll quote it before I touch it." Say it out loud, then put it on the invoice.
Recurrences are diagnostic gold. A part that failed twice in a month is telling you the root cause was never addressed. Go back further in the system, not just to the same component.
Log the callback, always, even when it was not your fault. Callback rate by tech and by job type is the number that finds training gaps and bad parts vendors. Suppressing it to protect a number destroys the only signal you have.
