The right vehicle depends on trade, average job size, geography, and budget. A residential cleaning company is a mid-size van; an HVAC install crew is a full-size box truck with a separate parts truck.

Layout principles

Zone-based organization

Divide the cargo space into zones:

  1. Frequent-use zone - tools and parts used on every job, in easy reach (waist-high, near the door).
  2. Daily-use zone - tools and parts used most days, one level up or down.
  3. Weekly-use zone - tools and parts used some days, in deeper or higher storage.
  4. Stock zone - bulk parts replenishment, in the deepest or highest storage.

The frequent-use zone is the highest-leverage real estate. It should contain less than 20% of the truck's contents but be used in 80% of jobs.

Vertical stacking

The floor of the van is wasted unless it's a walkway. Use:

  • Wall-mounted shelving units (Adrian Steel, Ranger Design, Sortimo, Knaack).
  • Bin systems on shelves for small parts.
  • Drawer units for tools.
  • Roof rack for ladders and pipe.

A van with everything on the floor stores about 30% of what the same van organized vertically can store.

One home for every tool

The shop floor principle "a place for everything and everything in its place" is foundational. Every tool gets a labeled spot. At the end of every job, the technician verifies every tool is back in its spot. The owner can spot a missing tool at a glance because the empty slot is visible.

Common implementations:

  • Tool foam (cut-out foam with tool silhouettes) - gold standard but expensive.
  • Pegboards with tool outlines.
  • Labeled drawers and bins.
  • Color-coded by category (red for electrical, blue for plumbing, etc.) - useful in multi-trade companies.

Parts inventory on the truck

The decision: which parts to stock on the truck, vs. fetch from the shop, vs. pick up from the supplier.

Truck-stocked inventory is a working-capital decision. Every dollar of parts sitting on the shelf is a dollar that isn't in the operating account. The right level is enough to handle the top 80% of service calls without a parts run, but not so much that significant capital is buried across the fleet.

Tool selection and quality

The economics of tool quality for a daily-use professional: a cheap consumer-grade tool that fails mid-job costs more in downtime than the professional-grade tool would have cost upfront. Lifetime-warrantied professional tools amortize their higher purchase price across years and frequently outlast multiple cheaper replacements. For tools used in every job, buy professional-grade. For tools used occasionally, mid-grade is fine. Tools used once a year can be rented.

Brands respected in most trades for daily-use professional tools: Klein (electrical), Knipex (pliers), Ridgid (plumbing), Milwaukee (cordless), DeWalt (cordless), Snap-on (automotive crossover).

Battery-tool standardization

Cordless tools are the largest category in most modern trucks. The single biggest efficiency gain is standardizing on one battery platform. A truck with 12 batteries across 4 brands is a charging nightmare; a truck with 6 batteries on a single platform charges overnight and powers the day.

Major platforms:

  • Milwaukee M12 / M18 (broadest tool catalog).
  • DeWalt 20V Max / FlexVolt.
  • Makita 18V / 40V.
  • Ryobi (DIY tier; not professional).
  • Festool (specialty; high cost, high quality).

Pick one for cordless drills, impact drivers, lights, and any specialty tools the platform offers. Use a different platform only when a critical tool isn't available on the primary platform.

Climate considerations

Trucks face environmental extremes that affect tools and parts:

  • Summer heat in a parked truck can exceed 140 degrees F. Battery chargers fail; adhesives spoil; some refrigerants degrade.
  • Winter cold cracks PVC, freezes water-based products, reduces battery capacity.
  • Humidity causes corrosion on tool steel.

Mitigations:

  • Park in shade when possible during summer.

Truck signage and branding

A service truck sits parked in a driveway for hours at a time in the exact neighborhood you want more work from. It is the cheapest advertising a shop owns, and it is also a legal display surface in most jurisdictions.

What has to be on it. Requirements vary, so confirm with the state board and the DOT, but the recurring items are:

  • Company legal or registered name, matching the name on the license and the invoice.
  • Contractor license number. Several states require it on the vehicle, not just on the paperwork. California Business and Professions Code section 7029.5 is the well-known example.
  • USDOT number and carrier name, for vehicles that meet the federal definition of a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. Many states extend a similar marking rule to intrastate operation. The rules live in 49 CFR Part 390.
  • Phone number. One number, not three.

Levels of branding, cheapest to most expensive:

  • Magnetic panels. Removable, low commitment, and they look it. They trap grit and scratch paint, they fall off at highway speed, and they walk away in parking lots. Acceptable for a first truck, not a fleet standard.
  • Cut vinyl lettering. Name, phone, license number, maybe a simple logo on a clean-colored vehicle. Durable, inexpensive relative to a wrap, and it reads as established rather than flashy.
  • Partial wrap. Vinyl graphics covering the lower body and rear doors with the factory paint showing above. Most of the visual impact of a full wrap at a fraction of the material and labor.
  • Full wrap. Highest impact, highest cost, and it also protects the paint underneath, which helps resale. Expect a service life of several years before sun exposure fades and cracks the film; garage-kept trucks last noticeably longer than ones parked outside.

Design rules that actually matter.

The rear doors are the highest-value surface on the vehicle, because the people who look at your truck longest are stopped behind it in traffic. Put the name and phone number there in the largest type that fits.

Legibility beats cleverness. Big letters, high contrast, a font someone can read at highway speed. A detailed logo, a list of eight services, and a small phone number is a truck nobody can read.

Say the trade. "Summit Mechanical" tells a homeowner nothing. "Summit Mechanical - Heating and Air" tells them who to call in July.

Keep a clean truck. A wrapped truck that is filthy and dented is worse advertising than an unmarked one, because now the neighborhood knows whose it is.

When to run unmarked. A few situations argue against branding: high-value tool loads in areas with break-in problems (a marked plumbing van tells a thief exactly what is inside), some high-end residential and property-management accounts that prefer discretion, and any work where the customer does not want the neighbors knowing a contractor is on site. Some shops split the difference with a lightly lettered truck rather than a full wrap.
