Water Hammer + Plumbing Noise Reference
Why this matters
"My plumbing makes weird sounds" + "bangs in the wall" are common customer complaints. Water hammer + various noises stem from specific causes; misdiagnosis = repeated callbacks. The plumber who identifies + fixes correctly delivers lasting solutions. This is the field card.
Water hammer
Definition: shock wave from sudden flow stop; pressure spike travels through pipe.
Sounds: bang, knock, thud - usually right after appliance shutoff (washer fill, dishwasher fill, ice maker, toilet flush).
Caused by: solenoid valve closes suddenly + water column momentum bangs into closed valve.
Damages: pipes loosen, joints fail, fixtures wear, appliances stress.
Water hammer solutions
Water hammer arrestor: spring-loaded piston OR air chamber; absorbs shock.
Install location: at appliance OR before solenoid valve.
Common brands: Sioux Chief HydraRester, Watts Hammer Arrestor, Oatey.
Sizes:
- Mini arrestor (1/2" thread): individual fixtures
- Tee-fit arrestor (1/2" copper sweat OR 1/2" threaded): inline
- Sleeve arrestor: behind washer
Capped air chambers (older): vertical pipe section with air trapped; effective initially but eventually waterlogged.
Recharge waterlogged air chambers: shut off water, drain system from lowest faucet, refill. Air re-enters chambers.
Other plumbing noises + causes
Whistle / squeal at faucet:
- High water pressure
- Cartridge / washer worn
- Aerator restriction
- Solution: clean aerator, replace cartridge, install PRV if pressure > 80 PSI
Thudding at toilet refill:
- Refill valve diaphragm worn
- Replace fill valve
Hum / vibration when water running:
- Loose pipe in wall (cabinet rattle)
- Hard water deposits in pipe constricting flow
- Worn faucet washer / cartridge
- Solution: secure pipe with strap; descale; replace component
Knock at hot water heater:
- Sediment buildup at bottom
- Flush water heater annually (drain few gallons)
Banging when hot water starts:
- Air in line (after service)
- Hot water expansion + contraction (sounds in long runs)
- Flush + bleed
Continuous drip sound:
- Faucet leak (sometimes hidden)
- Pressure-relief valve leaking
- Hidden pipe leak
Gurgling at drain:
- Vent blocked OR insufficient
- Trap dried out (rare use of fixture)
- Solution: clear vent, run water to refill trap
Hissing sound (no flow):
- Hidden leak (high-pressure water shooting in wall)
- Severe issue; locate + repair urgent
Rumbling boiler: scale on heating tubes; clean OR de-scale.
Whistling shower: cartridge OR worn-out valve.
Toilet ghost-flushing: flapper leak; water slowly drains; tank refills periodically.
Pressure-related issues
High water pressure (> 80 PSI):
- Per IPC P2903.3: PRV required when > 80 PSI
- Causes: appliance failures, water hammer, leaks at fittings
- Solution: install PRV at incoming line
Pressure fluctuation:
- Well pump pressure switch issue
- City water main supply variation
- Solution: pressure regulator OR water hammer arrestors
Low pressure:
- Clogged aerators, partial valve closure, undersized pipe, galvanized corrosion
Pipe-induced noises
Sweating pipes: warm air + cold water = condensation; not noise but related.
Pipe expansion + contraction: PEX + CPVC expand more than copper; properly support to allow movement.
Pipe in stud (not properly secured): thumping as flow starts/stops; secure with proper hangers / straps.
Crushed flex tubing in cabinet: rubbing on cabinet wall; reroute.
Diagnostic procedure
Step 1 - Identify what triggers the noise:
- Appliance fill (water hammer arrestor needed)
- Toilet refill (fill valve)
- Faucet operation (cartridge / aerator)
- Water heater (sediment)
- Always present (pressure issue OR leak)
Step 2 - Locate noise source: walk + listen; check at meter, water heater, behind appliances.
Step 3 - Check pressure: hose bib gauge; verify pressure is 45 - 75 PSI.
Step 4 - Inspect components:
- Open + close faucets to isolate
- Check aerators
- Inspect for loose pipes in walls
Step 5 - Apply fix: water hammer arrestor, PRV, secure pipe, replace component.
Common service tasks
These are the jobs a noise complaint actually turns into. Most are short; the diagnosis is the value, not the labor.
Washer-box arrestor pair: screw-on arrestors between both supply stops and both fill hoses. Under an hour, no cutting, no permit. The single most common fix on this complaint.
Inline arrestor at dishwasher or ice maker: cut in a tee or an arrestor elbow at the appliance stop. Access is the variable - under a sink is quick, behind a fridge in a finished wall is not.
Pressure-reducing valve install or replace: whenever static reads over 80 PSI. Half a day with the main shut down. Set to 50 - 60 PSI and re-verify at a fixture, not just at the valve.
Thermal expansion tank: required companion any time the house is closed off by a check valve, backflow preventer, or checking PRV. Pre-charge the tank to match the set system pressure with the water side empty; a tank charged at factory default does nothing.
Air chamber recharge: shut off, drain from the lowest fixture, refill. Cheap, fast, temporary. Tell the customer it is a stopgap and quote the arrestors.
Toilet fill valve replacement: the fix for thudding at refill and for ghost flushing. Under an hour per toilet. Replace the supply riser at the same time; the old one is the next callback.
Faucet cartridge or aerator service: for whistle and squeal. Clean or swap the aerator first, cartridge second. Bring the brand-matched cartridge or plan a return trip.
Water heater sediment flush: for rumble and knock during heating. An hour on a tank that has been maintained, considerably longer and sometimes unsuccessful on one that has never been drained.
Pipe securing: cushioned clamps or isolators at proper spacing wherever a line can move and strike framing. Often needs drywall access, so scope and price the patch as part of the job, not as a surprise.
Supply stop replacement: seized or partly closed stops cause both whistling and unreliable shutoff for every other repair on this list. Replace them while the water is already off.
When customer complaint is severe
Banging that shakes wall: serious water hammer; potentially cracking pipes. Immediate diagnosis required.
Hissing in wall (water flowing somewhere): hidden leak; locate + repair urgently before water damage.
Constant noise: not water hammer; investigate vent system, valve, pressure.
Customer education
Old houses (50+ yr): air chambers waterlogged; banging common; service recharge OR install arrestor.
Appliances on long runs: install arrestor near appliance.
High pressure: install PRV; saves appliances + reduces noise.
Flush water heater annually: prevents sediment-knock.
Replace fill valves every 5 - 10 yr: prevents toilet refill noise + ghost-flushing.
Truck stock
Water hammer arrestors (1/2" sweat + threaded, multiple sizes); PRV (3/4"); toilet fill valves; faucet aerators; pressure gauge; supply hoses; basic plumbing tools.
Common mistakes
Skipping pressure check (high pressure = root cause). Installing arrestor in wrong spot. Forgetting to drain + refill air chambers. Skipping leak inspection on continuous noise. Cheap arrestors fail. Not replacing fill valve when toilet thuds.

Sound + comfort
Beyond annoyance: water hammer damages pipes long-term. Pipe joints loosen, fittings crack, fixtures wear faster. Solution before damage = customer cost savings.
The single most-useful plumbing noise habit is the IDENTIFY-THE-TRIGGER question. Customer says "my plumbing bangs". Ask: "what's running when it bangs?" Washer fill = water hammer arrestor at washer; toilet flush + refill = fill valve OR check pressure; water heater knock = sediment flush; constant noise = leak. The trigger names the cause + names the fix. Walking-the-house listening without the trigger info wastes 80% of diagnostic time.
