Secondary Water Source Found During Drying Standard
Purpose
A zone stalls on day four of an otherwise ordinary dry-out, and the daily monitoring standard's stall test sends it to the equipment-lever decision. Sometimes adding airflow or dehumidification is the right call. Sometimes it is not, because a second, independent source is feeding that zone and no amount of added equipment will ever bring it to dry standard. A crew that keeps adding air movers against a live second feed burns unbillable equipment days chasing a curve that can never close, and a crew that closes the job without finding it leaves residual moisture behind that becomes a mold callback weeks later. This standard is the response once a second source is suspected or confirmed mid-drying, distinct from a second source found at intake, which the residential standard already handles at the front door.
Scope
Covers the response from the moment a second, independent water source is suspected during an in-progress dry-out through source control, re-scoping, and resumption of drying. It does not own the two-fault classification, active, old and dry, intermittent, or the original source migrating along a new path, that lives in the After Pulling Baseboard a Second Water Source Appears decision tree, invoked here rather than re-derived. It does not own the wicking-versus-independent-source distinction when a stall presents as rising moisture content after the known source was already stopped, that lives in the Source Stopped But MC Keeps Rising decision tree. It does not re-derive the daily monitoring loop or the equipment-lever decision, this standard is what that loop's own stop rule points to when the stall does not resolve as a simple equipment problem.

The procedure
Rule out equipment cause before suspecting a second source. Run the daily monitoring standard's physical equipment check, cords, filters, condensate drainage, placement, on the stalled zone before concluding a new source is involved. Acceptance: the check completed and logged clean, or a fault found and corrected, before this procedure continues. Wrong looks like jumping to "must be a second leak" and skipping the check that explains most stalls. Stop rule: any fault found gets corrected and the zone re-monitored one more cycle before proceeding; do not chase a second source a dead condensate pump would fully explain. Hazard: none new, equipment hazards already controlled in the daily monitoring standard apply here without addition.
Map the new moisture signature separately from the original, using the two-fault card's method. Mark and read the new signature's own perimeter and gradient, distinct from the original grid points. Acceptance: a second, independently labeled map with its own high point and gradient, not folded into the original grid. Wrong looks like adding a few extra points to the existing grid without noting a different footprint. Stop rule: if the two gradients appear to connect to a single origin, apply the migration-path branch from the two-fault card instead of treating this as a genuine second source. Hazard: none new, this is a mapping step.
Determine the category of the new source independently and apply the higher category to any overlap zone. Trace the new source's origin and contact history the way the intake standard categorizes the original loss; where the zones overlap, apply the higher category. Acceptance: a category recorded with its evidence, and a note on which category governs the overlap. Wrong looks like assuming the new source shares the original's category because it is in the same room. Stop rule: any indication of Category 3, sewage, floodwater, or contact with soil or a floor drain, routes that portion to the Sewage Category 3 standard before this procedure continues there. Hazard: none new, categorization carries no physical hazard beyond the entry hazards already controlled on the visit.
Control the new source before any further drying in that zone, and do not cut into a pressurized or hidden line yourself. Where the source is inside a wall, slab, or ceiling cavity and plumbing in origin, coordinate a licensed plumber to isolate or repair it; where it is roofing, envelope, or grading in origin, coordinate the appropriate trade the same way. Acceptance: a named trade contacted and a control or repair date recorded before drying resumes; where the source is within the crew's own scope, a valve reachable from outside the cavity, isolation confirmed and logged. Wrong looks like a technician opening drywall to chase a pressurized line's exact leak point without a plumber. Stop rule: if the source cannot be positively isolated the same visit, mark the zone hold-for-source-control and do not run equipment against it meanwhile; added airflow against a live feed only spends equipment days. Hazard: a hidden pressurized line inside a wall or slab can spray or scald when disturbed by someone probing blind; only a licensed plumber cuts into it, the crew's own probing stops at locating the general area.
Check for newly exposed electrical risk wherever the second source's path crosses a wall cavity with wiring. Before any demolition or equipment placement in the newly mapped zone, visually trace whether the water path reached an outlet, junction box, or wiring inside that cavity, and treat any suspect circuit as live until confirmed dead the same way the intake standard requires. Acceptance: a confirmed-dead reading with a non-contact voltage tester on any circuit within the new wet path before hands or equipment enter that cavity. Wrong looks like assuming the breakers isolated at intake still cover a cavity that was not part of the original wet footprint. Stop rule: any circuit inside the new wet path not already isolated at intake gets opened and confirmed dead before continuing into that cavity; a second source frequently reveals a wiring path nobody isolated because nobody knew it was wet. Hazard: trapped water inside a newly opened cavity in contact with an unconfirmed circuit is the same shock route the intake standard controls at the front door, now recurring where the original safety sweep never reached.
Issue a scope-change order before performing any added-scope work on the new footprint. Document the footprint, its category, and the estimated added drying time, and get it authorized, carrier or self-pay, before work beyond the original scope proceeds. Acceptance: a signed order dated before the added work begins. Wrong looks like drying the newly discovered area on the original authorization because stopping for a signature feels like a delay. Stop rule: added-scope work without authorization risks non-payment for that portion; where authorization cannot be obtained same-visit, mark the zone hold-for-authorization and do not equip it until signed. Hazard: none, this is an authorization gate.
Notify the customer and carrier in writing within 24 hours of confirming the second source. Send both a notice covering what was found, its classification, the control status, and the revised scope. Acceptance: a timestamped notice to both parties within 24 hours. Wrong looks like mentioning it verbally next visit and letting the notice wait for the final invoice. Stop rule: if the customer cannot be reached same-day, the notice still goes out within the window; do not hold it for a callback. Hazard: none, a documentation step.
Update the original drying-day estimate given at intake to reflect the new footprint. Revise the day range quoted under the residential intake standard's own customer walkthrough, and communicate it alongside the step 7 notice. Acceptance: a documented revised estimate, not a silent extension the customer notices only when the job runs long. Wrong looks like letting the original range stand unspoken while the job quietly runs past it. Stop rule: an estimate left unrevised past this point is a communication failure at closeout even if the technical work was sound. Hazard: none, this is a communication step.
Resume equipment on the new zone only after physical verification that the source is controlled, not on the trade's word alone. Before restarting equipment, confirm no active moisture is arriving: a dry period observed at the isolated fitting, a plumber's pressure-test confirmation in hand, or, for a weather- or grade-driven intermittent source, a note that re-verification is still owed at the next triggering event. Acceptance: a physical confirmation logged, the dry period, the pressure-test result, or the deferred re-verification trigger named, before equipment restarts. Wrong looks like restarting because the plumber said the job was done, with nobody on the restoration side confirming it independently. Stop rule: for an intermittent source, closing the job before the next triggering event, rain for a roof leak, a fixture cycle for a plumbing source, confirms no recurrence is not a completed verification; hold the file open and schedule the re-check rather than certifying dry on an unconfirmed intermittent cause. Hazard: none new beyond the source-control hazards in steps 4 and 5; this step checks that those controls held, not a fresh exposure.

One run of this procedure, filled in
Continuing the kitchen ceiling and cabinet cavity job from the daily monitoring standard: the cabinet cavity stalled again on day 5 after a brief improvement.
- Step 1: equipment check on the cavity's air mover found it running correctly, properly placed, no fault; the stall was not equipment-caused.
- Step 2: a second signature mapped inside the cavity, higher on the back wall than the original leak's gradient, with its own distinct high point.
- Step 3: traced to a supply line fitting behind the cabinet, unrelated to the water heater; categorized Category 1, no overlap concern since both sources were clean water.
- Step 4: a licensed plumber contacted the same day; the fitting isolated at a nearby valve within an hour, control confirmed and logged.
- Step 5: the new wet path did not reach any wiring; no circuit action needed beyond what intake had already isolated.
- Step 6: scope-change order written for the added footprint and the repair line item; customer signed same visit.
- Step 7: written notice sent to the customer and the carrier the same afternoon, inside the 24-hour window.
- Step 8: original 5-to-10-day estimate revised to reflect two additional drying days; revision communicated with the step 7 notice.
- Step 9: this step did not pass on the first attempt. The plumber's fix stopped the active drip, but the fitting sat behind a wall section with a history of condensation in humid weather, and the tech could not rule out an intermittent, weather-linked contribution. Stop rule taken: equipment was not restarted on the assumption of full control. The zone got a deferred re-verification trigger, the next high-humidity stretch, and drying resumed only on the confirmed dry-period observation for the plumbing portion, flagged for one more check rather than closed out on the plumber's repair alone.
