Screen Repair and Replacement Workflow for Cleaning Routes

Why this matters

Screens are an attached service that few window-cleaning operators capture well. The technician is already at the window, the screen is already in their hands during the cleaning, and a torn or sagging screen takes 5 to 15 minutes to repair or replace with the right truck stock. Customers consistently want screen work done by the same person who cleans the windows, because the alternative is calling a separate vendor and scheduling a second site visit. Operators who set up their trucks for screen work add 15 to 30 percent to their per-customer revenue without lengthening the appointment. This guide is the workflow for adding screen repair and replacement to a window-cleaning route without slowing the route to a crawl.

What a customer actually wants

A typical residential customer with one or more damaged screens wants:

  • A quick assessment with no commitment ("can you fix this?").
  • A clear yes/no on whether it is a repair (re-screen the existing frame) or a replacement (new frame and screen).
  • A clear answer on whether the work can be done today or requires a return visit.
  • The work done without removing the screen from the property.

That sequence is what the operator's truck stock and process should enable. Anything that requires the customer to call back, schedule again, or live without their screens for a week loses the sale.

Diagnosing screen damage

Three categories cover most damage:

  1. Mesh damage only. Tear, hole, abrasion, or pet damage to the screen mesh itself. The frame is intact. The fix is re-screening: remove the spline, remove the old mesh, install new mesh, install new spline. The original frame is reused.
  2. Frame damage with intact mesh. Bent, crushed, or broken frame from impact or aging. Sometimes from the screen being pried out of the window track. The mesh may be salvageable, but the work is essentially a full replacement.
  3. Full failure. Frame and mesh both compromised. Common on old screens that have been in service 20+ years; aluminum frames have oxidized to brittleness, mesh has lost UV strength and tears at the slightest touch.

Category 1 is a 10 to 15 minute repair per screen with truck stock. Category 2 and 3 are full replacements that require measurement and either truck-stock fabrication or a return visit with a custom-fabricated screen.

Truck stock for screen work

A truck set up for screens carries:

  • Fiberglass screen mesh rolls in two grades (standard 18x16 mesh for general use; tighter weave like solar screen for sun-control customers).
  • Aluminum screen frame stock in standard sizes (5/16 inch and 7/16 inch widths are most common; 3/8 inch in some regions).
  • Frame corner inserts in matching sizes.
  • Spline material in two diameters (typically .135 and .160 inch; the existing spline groove dictates which one).
  • Spline roller tool.
  • Screen-rolling table (a folding plastic table works; a dedicated screen-fabrication table is faster).
  • Mesh cutter (carpet knife or a dedicated screen knife).
  • Frame cutter (manual miter cutter or a small chop saw; the manual cutter works for residential volume).
  • A few common pet-screen options (heavier woven mesh that resists cat and dog claws) for upsell.
  • A few solar-screen options for sun-control upsell.

The full kit fits in a single tote on a service truck. Cost of stocking it pays back inside the first month at typical residential pricing.

The on-route conversation

When a customer points out a damaged screen during a window-cleaning visit:

Let me take a look. (Examines screen.) This one is the mesh, not the frame; I can re-screen it right now in about 15 minutes for you, and you would not have to call anyone else out. The frame on this other one is bent; that one is a replacement, and I can either build it now if you have time or come back tomorrow with a pre-built. The third one is just dirty, not damaged; I will clean that one with the regulars.

That conversation closes the upsell at the moment of recognition. Pre-priced add-ons let the technician give a number on the spot. Return visits should be the exception, not the routine.

The re-screening procedure

For a category 1 mesh-only repair on the customer's screen:

  1. Lay the screen on a flat work surface, mesh-up.
  2. Use a screwdriver or spline removal tool to lift one end of the spline; pull the spline out around the perimeter.
  3. Remove the old mesh.
  4. Cut a piece of new mesh approximately 2 inches larger than the frame on each side.
  5. Position the mesh over the frame; check that the weave is square to the frame.
  6. With the spline roller, press the mesh into the spline groove starting at one corner. Use the convex side of the roller wheel to seat the mesh into the groove.
  7. Press the new spline into the groove over the mesh, using the concave side of the roller wheel. Work around the perimeter, keeping the mesh taut but not over-stretched. Over-stretched mesh bows the aluminum frame; under-stretched mesh sags after a few weeks.
  8. At each corner, press the spline firmly into the corner. Do not allow it to bridge.
  9. Trim the excess mesh with the carpet knife, cutting on the outside of the spline groove.
  10. Inspect for tension and squareness.

A practiced technician does this in 10 minutes per screen. The customer watches it happen and is generally pleased.

The frame-replacement procedure

For a category 2 or 3 frame replacement:

  1. Remove the damaged screen from the window. Measure the existing frame outside-to-outside dimensions, height and width.
  2. If matching the existing frame profile, note the width (5/16, 3/8, or 7/16 inch) and the color (mill aluminum, white, bronze, black are the common options).
  3. Cut the new frame stock to the measured length, mitering at 45 degrees at each corner, or square-cutting if using corner inserts that absorb the angle.
  4. Assemble the frame with corner inserts. Pre-fit and check for square diagonals.
  5. Lay the assembled frame on the work surface and re-screen as above.
  6. Reinstall the new screen in the window. Verify fit; trim or reform frame slightly if needed.

A frame replacement is 25 to 40 minutes per screen. Build them in batches when several are needed on one property.

Solar screen and pet screen upsells

Two upsell options that customers genuinely value:

Solar screen. A dense woven mesh that blocks a large share of incoming solar heat and glare before it reaches the glass. Sold by shade percentage; the higher the number, the more heat blocked and the darker the view through it. The pitch is the west and south elevations, rooms that overheat in the afternoon, and rooms with fading furniture or flooring. It re-screens into the existing frame using the same procedure as standard mesh, so the labor is identical and only the material changes.

What to tell the customer honestly: solar screen darkens the view and reduces daylight, which some people dislike in a kitchen or a room they read in. It is also more visible from outside than standard mesh. Recommend it selectively by elevation rather than whole-house, and let them look through a sample against the actual window before they commit.

Pet screen. A heavy vinyl-coated polyester mesh, several times the tear strength of standard fiberglass. The pitch writes itself on any property where a dog or cat has already pushed through a screen, and on sliding patio doors and any low screen a pet can reach.

What to tell the customer honestly: pet screen is thicker, so the view through it is slightly reduced and it is a little harder to see out of at an angle. It is heavier to work, so it wants a larger spline and a firm hand at the corners. It is tear resistant, not indestructible; a determined large dog will still get through eventually.

Both are the easiest add-ons in the trade because you are already on the property with the screens off the windows and the spline roller in hand. Quote them per screen while you are pulling screens for a cleaning job, not on a separate visit. The single best moment to raise it is standing at the window holding the damaged screen the customer already knows about.
