Solo Operator Route-Density Math
Why this matters
A solo window cleaner who books one job here, one job there, and drives 25 minutes between each runs out of day at about 4 stops. Tighten the cluster and the same operator either adds a fifth stop or finishes the same four an hour earlier. Get to 7 or 8 stops and you have done two things, not one: tightened the geography and shifted the job mix toward shorter tickets. Density alone will not do it, and any article that says otherwise has not multiplied its own numbers out. This reference is the math and the booking practice for getting density without sacrificing customer responsiveness, written for the solo operator who owns the schedule directly.
The basic math
A working day for a solo residential window cleaner is approximately 8 hours of available time, accounting for lunch and the start-end overhead. Within those 8 hours, the time budget breaks roughly into:
- On-glass time: the actual cleaning work, varies by job size.
- Setup and breakdown per stop: 10 to 20 minutes per house (unloading, walking the job with the customer, payment and goodbyes).
- Drive time between stops: depends on density.
A typical 8-window standard residential cleaning is 60 to 90 minutes of on-glass time plus 15 minutes of setup-breakdown, for a per-job duration of 75 to 105 minutes. Call it 90 for planning.
Do not budget drive time as a fixed leftover, because the number of drives grows with the number of stops. For n stops you drive n+1 legs, counting the run out in the morning and the run home:
n x (job duration) + (n + 1) x (average drive) <= 480 minutes
Solve it for n and the whole argument falls out. On 90-minute jobs:

Read that table honestly. Cutting the drive from 20 minutes to 10 does not double the day. It buys back about 50 minutes, which is either a fifth stop on a fast day or an earlier evening. That is a real gain and it is worth organizing the whole business around, but it is roughly a quarter more capacity, not double.
The reason a dense operator gets to 7 or 8 stops is the second lever: job duration is in the equation twice as heavily as drive time. Drop the mix toward small townhouse and condo packages at 35 minutes on-glass plus 15 setup, so 50 minutes a stop, hold the drive at 10, and the same day supports (480 - 10) / 60 = 7.8, call it 7 stops. Shortening the average job by 40 minutes did four times what halving the drive did.
Practical reading: chase density to protect the day you already have, and chase job mix when you want more stops in it.
How drive time actually behaves
Drive time between two arbitrary residential addresses in a metro area is not predictable from straight-line distance. Three factors dominate:
- Geographic density of the customer base. A cleaner with 200 customers spread across a 50-mile metro has different routing options than one with 200 customers in a 10-mile arc. The denser base supports denser daily routes.
- Time of day. Drive from 8 AM to 10 AM is faster than drive from 4 PM to 6 PM in most cities. Routes that start in the residential outer ring and work toward the urban core in the morning, then back outward in the afternoon, avoid the worst rush periods.
- Cluster behavior of repeat customers. Customers who repeat tend to book on similar months of the year (spring after pollen, fall after summer dust). A repeat customer base on a 6-month rotation creates natural seasonal clusters.
The cleaner who maps customers and groups them into geographic clusters can route by cluster, not by individual address.
The cluster-routing model
Divide the service area into 4 to 8 named clusters (north hills, downtown core, west side, etc.). Each cluster is a geographic area where any two addresses are within a 10 to 15 minute drive of each other.
When a customer books:
- Identify which cluster the address falls into.
- Offer the customer a date when other work is already scheduled in that cluster, or a date when other cluster jobs can be added.
- If the customer needs urgent service that does not fit a clustered day, offer it but understand that the day will be less profitable.
The customer-facing language:
I work the west side of town on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the north hills on Mondays and Wednesdays, and downtown on Fridays. I have an opening on Thursday afternoon for you, or if you can wait until next Thursday I can fit you in between two other jobs nearby.
That conversation manages the customer's expectations and protects the route density. Customers who genuinely need flexibility accept the constraint; customers who insist on a one-off date understand they may pay a premium or wait.
Map and tools
A simple paper map of the service area with pushpins for each customer works for an operator with up to a few hundred customers. Beyond that, a route-optimization software (Optimoroute, Route4Me, Circuit) or the routing features of a small-business job-scheduling app saves time on both the planning and the day-of navigation.
Critical features for a solo operator:
- Day-view that shows the planned sequence and total drive time.
- Ability to drag jobs between days to rebalance the week.
- Address verification and navigation handoff to the operator's preferred map app.
- Customer history and notes attached to each address.
Booking the day
The booking discipline that produces dense routes:
- Default offer the cluster day. When a customer calls or books online, the system or operator offers the next clustered date first.
- Anchor jobs first. Larger or more time-flexible jobs are scheduled first; smaller jobs fill in around them. A 4-hour commercial storefront cleaning anchors the morning of a day, with 2 to 3 small residentials in the same cluster filling the afternoon.
- Manage the gap-fillers. A "fill-in" customer who can take any date that opens up is a great anchor for cluster days that have unfilled slots. Maintain a short list of these flexible customers and call when a slot opens.
- Avoid splitting the day across clusters. A west-side morning and an east-side afternoon means a 30 to 60 minute lunch-time crossing that loses revenue every week. Block the day to one cluster.
Recurring customer scheduling
The customers who repeat (biannual, annual, quarterly, monthly) are the foundation of route density. Each repeat customer can be auto-scheduled into their cluster on a known cadence. The operator's job is to keep the cadence accurate and to fill in around the recurring base with one-time bookings.
A target mix for a stable solo operator:
- 60 to 70 percent recurring residential.
- 10 to 20 percent recurring commercial (storefronts, restaurants).
- 10 to 30 percent one-time bookings, including post-construction and high-end one-off restorations.
The recurring base predicts the next month's revenue; the one-time bookings are the upside.
Margin-by-density math
Compare three days to make the math vivid. All three use 75 minutes on-glass plus 15 minutes setup on a standard house, except where noted.
Day one, loose route: 4 standard jobs, average 20-minute drives. On-glass 4 x 75 = 300 minutes. Setup and breakdown 4 x 15 = 60 minutes. Driving, 5 legs at 20 minutes including the run home, = 100 minutes. Total 460 minutes, 7.7 hours. Four stops billed, and with lunch the day closes near 5 PM.
Day two, same jobs, tight cluster: 4 standard jobs, average 10-minute drives. Job time is unchanged at 360 minutes. Driving, 5 legs at 10 minutes, = 50 minutes. Total 410 minutes, 6.8 hours. Same four stops billed, done 50 minutes sooner. That 50 minutes is the entire prize for halving the drive, and it is not enough for a fifth 90-minute stop unless the day runs fast. This is the day most operators actually get when they tighten geography, and it is worth having: it is an hour of your life back, every working day, at no cost to revenue.
Day three, tight cluster plus a short-ticket mix: 7 small jobs at 35 minutes on-glass, average 10-minute drives. On-glass 7 x 35 = 245 minutes. Setup and breakdown 7 x 15 = 105 minutes. Driving, 8 legs at 10 minutes, = 80 minutes. Total 430 minutes, 7.2 hours. Seven stops billed, and the day is still shorter than day one.
The comparison makes the lever obvious. Day two beat day one on hours. Day three beat both on stops, and it got there by changing what a stop is, not by driving faster. Note also what day three costs: setup and breakdown is now 105 of the 430 minutes, almost a quarter of the day. Per-stop overhead is the tax on a short-ticket route, which is why operators running that model attack setup time hard, staging the truck once for the whole cluster and keeping the customer walk-through short.
