Custom Window Shape Pricing
Why this matters
Custom-shaped windows (arched, circular, trapezoidal, eyebrow, etc.) command premium pricing but also require specific handling: ordering, installation, and customer expectations. A contractor who can quote and install custom shapes captures premium remodel work; one who quotes guess-priced custom or refers them away misses high-margin opportunities. Knowing the price premiums and the considerations is the skill.

Specific pricing examples
Prices move constantly by region, by manufacturer, and by glass package, so quote custom shapes as a multiple of a known baseline rather than from a memorized number. The baseline is a standard rectangular unit in the same frame material, same glass package, same finish. Everything below is expressed against that baseline, and every one of them still needs a manufacturer quote before it goes on paper.
Standard rectangular vinyl
This is the reference unit, the 1.0 multiplier that every other line is measured against. A stock-size double-hung or slider in white vinyl with a standard double-pane low-E package, pulled from a manufacturer's regular production run, priced off a published size grid.
What keeps it at baseline: standard sizes, standard color, no shape work, no custom trim, and a lead time measured in days or a couple of weeks rather than months. Installation is a known labor unit that a two-person crew can repeat several times a day.
Move off the baseline the moment any of those change. A non-stock size, an exterior color, grids, or an upgraded glass package all add before you have touched the shape at all. Quote the material change and the shape premium as separate lines so the customer can see which decision costs what.
Round-top vinyl
A rectangular unit with a half-round or segmented arch head, ordered as a single assembly or as an arched transom mulled to a rectangular unit below. The most common custom shape in residential remodel.
Expect roughly a half again the baseline for the same opening area, sometimes more in a name-brand line. The premium comes from a bent or welded frame section, a curved sash or fixed glazing bead, and glass cut to a template rather than to a rectangle.
Installation runs longer than baseline but not dramatically: the lower unit installs conventionally, and the labor cost sits in getting the arch seated, flashed, and trimmed without a gap at the spring line. Budget curved exterior and interior trim as its own line item; standard casing will not follow the arch, and a curved extension jamb or a flexible trim product is a real material and labor cost that estimators routinely leave out.
Half-round vinyl
A standalone half circle, usually a fixed transom over a door or a window, sometimes a gable-end accent. Priced per unit rather than per square foot, and the per-square-foot number looks alarming because the unit is small and the tooling is the same as it would be on a large one.
Expect somewhere between one and a half and twice a rectangular unit of comparable area, with the multiple climbing as the unit gets smaller. A tiny half-round can cost close to what a full-size rectangular window costs.
Two things drive the quote up. Radius accuracy: the manufacturer builds to the radius and spring line you submit, and a field measurement off by a small amount produces a unit that will not sit in the opening. And true half-round versus segmented arch: they are different products, they are not interchangeable, and the customer cannot tell them apart from the ground, so confirm which one is in the opening now.
Round / circular vinyl
A full circle, almost always fixed, usually an architectural accent in a gable, a stairwell, or an entry.
Expect roughly two to two and a half times the baseline. The frame is a continuous bent section with no straight runs to hide a tolerance error, the glass is cut and sealed as a circle, and the insulating unit's spacer has to follow the curve, which is a specialty operation at the glass plant.
Circles are also where installation cost separates from material cost. The rough opening has to be genuinely round and genuinely plumb, flashing has to be formed rather than cut from a roll, and interior trim is a millwork item, often a two-piece ring. Add a second set of hands, because a circle has no bottom edge to rest on while you shim it.
Ask before quoting whether the customer wants grids inside the glass. Radial or sunburst grid patterns in a circle add meaningfully to the unit price and to the lead time.
Custom (one-off) wood
A shape the manufacturer does not carry: an ellipse, an octagon with an unequal side, a trapezoid to a specific roof pitch, an owner-designed or architect-drawn unit. Built to your submitted drawing, sometimes by a millwork shop rather than a production line.
Expect several times the baseline, commonly three to four times and higher on complex geometry or a species and finish package outside the shop's normal stock. Lead times run at the long end of the range, and rush charges on a one-off are steep when they are available at all.
The quote has to carry more than the unit. Shop drawing review and approval time, a site template if the shop requires one, freight on a crated one-off, a contingency for a unit that arrives wrong, and the reality that a replacement takes as long as the original did. Never sell a one-off on a schedule that has no float in it, and get the customer's signature on the approved shop drawing before it goes to production. Once it is built, it fits one opening in the world.
Cathedral wood
A tall arched-head unit, often in a foyer or a great room, sometimes spanning two floor levels as a mulled assembly.
Expect three to five times the baseline, driven as much by size and assembly as by the arch itself. These are large, heavy units, frequently shipped as multiple pieces to be mulled and flashed on site, and the glass package alone can carry a tempering requirement based on the sill height and location.
Labor is the line that gets underestimated. Interior scaffolding or a lift, four hands minimum on the set, structural review of the header on any opening being enlarged, and trim work performed at height. Add exterior access, since the head of a two-story cathedral unit is not reachable from a stepladder.
Price the finish work honestly too. Stained interior trim on a curved head is skilled millwork, and on a foyer unit it is the part the customer looks at every day.
Quoting custom shapes

Installation considerations
Rough opening
The existing rough opening must match the new window:
- Square / rectangular openings are standard
- Custom shape requires custom opening (typically already in place for replacement)
- New construction: opening built to specification
Framing
For custom shapes:
- Header design may differ
- King studs and trimmers per design
- Engineering review for non-standard
Flashing
Same principles as standard:
- Sill flashing
- Side jamb flashing
- Head flashing (custom-shaped)
For non-standard shapes:
- Custom flashing forming

Trim
Custom shapes require custom trim:

NEVER quote a custom-shape window without first obtaining manufacturer pricing for the specific specification. Custom shapes vary wildly in cost (Round-top vinyl might be 50 percent premium; full circle wood might be 300 percent). Estimating without manufacturer quote can produce dramatic discrepancies between quote and actual cost. Always get the manufacturer quote first.
