Landscaping and Hardscape Protection Before Excavation
Why this matters
A pier job that fixes the foundation and leaves a cracked paver patio, a severed irrigation line, or a dead maple behind it is not a finished job to the customer, it is a new complaint sitting on top of a repair they already paid for. The structural work is what the contract is for, but the yard around it is what the customer sees every day, and damage there gets noticed within the hour while a pier's proof load sits in a file nobody but the shop reads. Crews that treat site protection as an afterthought lose the goodwill a clean repair earns, and they lose it on the one part of the job that costs almost nothing to protect and a real sum to repair.
Walk and document the site before anything moves
Before a tool comes off the truck, walk the yard with the customer and a camera and record what is already there: cracks in the patio or walkway, stressed or dead plantings, uneven pavers, sprinkler head locations, low-voltage lighting wire runs, fence and gate condition, and the state of the turf itself. Shoot wide context frames of each feature plus close shots of any existing damage with something in frame for scale. Time-stamp the set and attach it to the job file before the crew stages a single piece of equipment.
This is the shop's only defense against a claim that predates the work. A hairline crack in a walkway that has been there for three years looks identical to one made by a tracked skid steer, and without a dated photo the argument is decided by whoever is more upset, which is always the customer. Skip this step and the shop absorbs every ambiguous claim on every job, whether it caused the damage or not.
The utility locate happens on this same walk, but it is not this article's procedure: the utility locate SOP covers where buried customer-side lines get marked. What follows here is what a crew physically does to protect a marked line once work starts, which that SOP does not cover.
Protect irrigation, low-voltage and surface utilities in the work corridor
Once marks are down, protect what is exposed rather than just working around it. Cap sprinkler heads inside the work footprint with the head's own cap rather than taping over them, and flag valve boxes and any exposed lateral so a machine operator sees them before the bucket does, not after.
Isolate the zone before you dig it, not just the head. Confirm the irrigation controller's schedule for any zone crossing the pit and disable it at the controller, physically, not by asking the homeowner to remember, because an automatic cycle firing into an open, shored excavation saturates the soil against the shoring and washes fines out of a compacted backfill lift days after the crew has moved on. If that isolation does not hold, a smart controller with a schedule nobody on site can access, or a second controller nobody knew about, the pit gets a physical cover or the spoil and cover discipline the excavation SOP already requires at end of shift, applied a day early rather than skipped because "the controller is handled." A saturated slope failing overnight with nobody there to see it start is worse than one failing during working hours.
Protect hardscape and turf from equipment and spoil
Point loads break hardscape, not general use. A skid steer or a mini excavator crossing a paver patio or a stamped walkway on its tracks concentrates enough load at each contact point to crack a paver or start a stress line through concrete that will not show for months. Lay plywood or dedicated track mats along every equipment path that crosses hardscape or turf before the first pass, sized to the machine's full track length so no point in the travel path is ever bare hardscape under a track.
Spoil does the same damage a different way. Piling it directly on turf smothers the grass for as long as the pile sits, and piling it against a paver or a concrete edge stains the material and can push the edge out of alignment as the pile settles and spreads. Tarp or plate every spoil pile, keep it off hardscape entirely, and hold it back from the excavation edge per the excavation SOP's own clearance rule, since that requirement exists for slope stability and happens to also keep spoil off anything worth protecting nearby. If a narrow lot leaves nowhere to plate spoil that far back, the answer is a smaller, more frequently hauled pile, not a pile against the nearest hard edge.
Protect trees and planting beds in the work corridor
A tree's root zone extends well past its canopy, and the roots doing the most water and gas exchange sit in the top foot of soil, exactly where equipment tracks and staged material do the most damage. Where equipment or foot traffic must pass within a tree's drip line, flag the line and route machine travel outside it wherever the site allows; where it cannot be avoided, lay plywood across the crossing the same way as across hardscape, because compacted soil over a root zone suffocates roots as effectively as cutting them does. Do not stage material or spoil on a root zone for more than a day; a spoil pile left there for a week can do more lasting harm to a mature tree than the excavation itself.
This is a different job from cutting a root that is actually in structural conflict with the foundation, which is engineered work covered in the root barrier installation article. This section is about not damaging a tree that has no conflict with the job at all, purely because the crew's path happened to cross its root zone.
Secure the site and staged materials at the end of each working day
Barricading and covering the open pit itself at end of shift is the excavation SOP's requirement and is not repeated here. What this article owns is everything else left in the yard overnight: staged pipe, fasteners, hand tools, and spoil left where a family still has to move through the yard that evening. Clear a walkable path back to the house that does not cross staged material or a spoil pile, even if it means re-staging tools closer to the truck rather than leaving them where they landed for convenience. A family stepping over a coil of hose or a pallet of block in the dark is a trip hazard the crew created, and if a secured perimeter around staged material is not practical on a given lot, the material comes back onto the truck instead of staying in the yard overnight.
Restore grade and hardscape once the work closes
Backfill and compaction are the excavation SOP's procedure; what follows here is restoring the surface the customer actually sees. Regrade disturbed soil to shed water away from the foundation rather than leaving a compacted low spot that ponds against the wall the crew just repaired. Reset any paver or stepping stone that was lifted to expose a working area to its original line and level. Reseed or resod turf that equipment paths or spoil piles killed. Re-test every irrigation zone that was capped or isolated by running it through a full cycle and watching each head in the work footprint, not just the one nearest the pit, because a coupling knocked loose two heads down the line is still this job's responsibility, and it will not surface until the customer runs the system on its own schedule days later.
Worked example
Six pier locations along the rear wall of a single-story house, a two-day window. The pre-walk photographed fourteen existing conditions: a hairline crack already present in the rear patio's northeast corner, two worn heads on the rear irrigation zone, and a Japanese maple 6 ft off the third bracket location. Zone 4 on the controller crossed the planned equipment path, and the controller turned out to be a smart model with a rain-delay schedule nobody on site could access, so instead of disabling it at the controller the crew closed the isolation valve at the backflow assembly, which holds regardless of what the controller decides to do on its own. Plywood track mats covered the 38 ft equipment path from the gate to the rear pits, and the pit beside the maple was hand-excavated for its final 2 ft rather than machine-dug, keeping the bucket outside the tree's drip line entirely.
The failure happened on day one. Spoil from bracket 3 was piled directly against the patio's north edge instead of tarped 4 ft back as planned, because the yard's narrow side gate limited where a plate could sit that day. By the second morning the pile had wicked moisture into the paver base and pushed the edge course out by about half an inch. The crew's own morning walk caught it, not the final walk-through: the affected pavers were pulled, reset on fresh bedding sand, and the spoil moved to the plated area near the driveway that had been available the whole time, just less convenient to reach on day one. The fix cost about twenty minutes on day two; leaving it until close-out would have meant resetting a longer run of pavers and a harder conversation about who caused it.
At close-out, the closing photo set matched the opening set on every logged condition except the reset paver course, which the morning catch had already resolved and documented separately. All four irrigation zones ran a full cycle with every head in the work footprint checked by eye, and the northeast patio crack, present in the pre-walk photo, was pointed out to the customer as pre-existing before they asked about it.
Verify before you call the job closed
Match the closing photo set against the opening set, item by item, and note anything that changed and why. Run every irrigation zone that touched the work footprint through a full cycle and watch each head, not just listen for the pump to cycle. Walk every equipment path checking turf for compaction that a light raking and reseed will not fix on its own. Confirm every paver, stepping stone or edge restraint that was lifted sits flush and does not rock underfoot. Do the customer walk-through with this checklist in hand, not from memory, and name any item that cannot be fully restored to its pre-work condition before the customer finds it themselves.
