New Crack Appears During Lifting: Response
Purpose
The distress stop rule in the lift and relevel sequence tells the crew when to stop. It does not tell them what a brand-new crack means once the pump is off and the house is holding at whatever elevation it reached. That gap is where this shop has been burned before: a crew treats a new crack like any other monitored reading, logs it, and finishes the lift at the next visit, and six weeks later the customer is asking why nobody told them a wall cracked during work they paid for.
A crack that appears during a lift differs in kind from one the monitoring program tracks. That program watches cracks already there. This crack was not on the pre-condition record or the predicted-movement list, and the customer never signed off on it, because nobody could predict it before it happened. So triage it for structural significance before deciding whether to keep lifting, and treat the customer conversation as a new disclosure, not an update to an old one.
Scope
Covers the response once a new crack, not present on the pre-condition record, appears anywhere in the structure during an active lift under the lift and relevel sequence, from the moment the stop rule fires through the resume-or-terminate decision, customer disclosure and incident close-out.
Does not cover the mechanics of the distress stop itself, the increment log, or the manifold and lock-off procedure, which the lift and relevel sequence owns and which this procedure assumes already ran. Does not cover a crack already on the pre-condition record simply widening under that sequence's own crack-monitor trigger, which stays inside its stop rule and does not open this procedure. Does not cover diagnosing why the crack formed once the structural question is resolved; that routes to the applicable troubleshooting card for the observed pattern.

Procedure
Step 1: Freeze the increment and clear the space before anyone approaches the crack
The moment a new crack is called, the cylinder operator holds pressure flat at the current increment across the whole manifold, and the interior watcher does not approach until the lift lead confirms nobody is standing under a masonry lintel, a header, or any overhead element the crack could be tracking. Acceptance: pressure held flat at every gauge, and a verbal all-clear from the lift lead before anyone crosses into the room. Wrong looks like a crew member walking straight up to photograph a crack over a doorway while the load above it is still finding a new equilibrium. Hazard: a crack that just formed in a load-bearing element can still be moving, so stand to the side of any opening it crosses, not underneath it, until step 2's classification is done, and if debris or dust begins falling from the crack at any point, back the whole room out immediately and treat it as a possible partial failure rather than a crack to photograph.
Step 2: Classify the crack as load path or finish before anything else happens
Trace the crack by eye and by light touch, not by tapping or probing, to the nearest structural element: a bearing wall, a header, a floor joist, a masonry wythe. Acceptance: a written classification of structural or finish-only, with the element it was traced to named on the record. Wrong looks like calling it "just drywall" because the visible face is painted gypsum, without checking whether the seam it follows sits directly over a header or a bearing point. Stop rule: any doubt about which category it falls into is treated as structural until the design professional says otherwise; a technician does not clear a crack as cosmetic on their own judgment for this event, even one who clears cosmetic items routinely under the expectation-setting record.
Step 3: Measure and photograph it exactly as if it were a new monitoring point
Read the crack width against a comparator card at its widest point, photograph it with a scale and a date stamp, and mark its exact location on the floor plan relative to the nearest numbered bracket and the cumulative lift at the moment it appeared. Acceptance: a width in millimetres, a photo with scale, a floor-plan location, and the cumulative lift figure all on the incident record before the crew moves on. Wrong looks like a phone photo with no scale and "about an eighth of an inch" written from memory that afternoon; that reading becomes the crack's only baseline, and a soft one is useless against a dispute months out.
Step 4: Get a written answer before applying any further pressure at that bracket
Send the classification, the measurement, the photo and the cumulative lift figure to the design professional and hold that bracket until a written answer returns. Acceptance: a written resume-or-hold instruction naming the bracket by number. Wrong looks like the lift lead deciding on site that the crack "looks stable" and pushing one more increment to finish the day's work. Stop rule: no written answer, no further pressure at that bracket, regardless of schedule pressure or a customer asking when the crew will be done.
Step 5: Decide whether the rest of the manifold can continue
Where the manifold ties brackets together on a common pressure line, as the lift and relevel sequence sets up by default, the flagged bracket cannot be isolated from the others without breaking the manifold apart, and continuing elsewhere on the same line risks the same load path the crack just flagged. Acceptance: a written statement from the design professional on whether any bracket may proceed and which ones. Wrong looks like a crew assuming the rest of the house is fine because the crack showed up in one corner. Where brackets run on an independent line and the design professional clears it, those may continue on their own increment schedule while the flagged bracket holds.
Step 6: Verify the physical condition before resuming, not just the paperwork
Once written clearance arrives, the lift lead does not restart the pump on the strength of the email alone. Re-measure the crack against the step 3 baseline, confirm it has not moved further while holding, and physically inspect the traced element for any new sign, such as fresh dust, a shifted fastener, or daylight through a gap that was not there before. Acceptance: a re-measurement matching or better than the hold reading, and a clean physical inspection, both logged before the cylinder is charged again. Wrong looks like resuming on the clearance email the moment it lands without anyone looking at the crack again; the email cleared the condition as reported, not the condition as it stands an hour later. Stop rule: any further opening since the hold reading cancels the clearance and sends the bracket back to step 4.
Step 7: Disclose to the customer before they find it themselves
The supervisor, not the field crew, tells the customer the same day: what was found, where, the classification, and what the design professional decided. State plainly that this crack was not on the pre-condition record and was not on the predicted-movement list, because it was not foreseeable before the lift, and say what happens next rather than speculating about cause. Acceptance: a written summary delivered the same day, separate from the routine lift log. Wrong looks like folding this into the end-of-day punch list as one more line item; a customer who learns about a new crack from an offhand comment, or by noticing it themselves, treats the whole disclosure as a cover-up regardless of how the crack itself resolves.
Step 8: Reopen the room and restore normal access once cleared
Once the bracket is cleared to proceed or the lift is complete, remove any barrier or restricted-access marking placed on the room in step 1 and confirm with the customer that normal use of the space has resumed. Acceptance: the room noted as reopened on the incident record with the date. Wrong looks like a room left cordoned off after the crew has moved on because nobody closed the loop; a customer living around caution tape for a week reads it as the shop having something to hide.
The record this produces
One incident record, separate from the routine lift log: the classification and the element it traced to, the width, photo and floor-plan location, the cumulative lift at the moment it appeared, the written hold-and-resume correspondence with the design professional, the resume-verification reading, the customer disclosure with its delivery date, and the room-reopening note.
It attaches to the job file alongside the lift log and follows the warranty record. The warranty administrator reads it first if a customer later disputes when a crack appeared, because it is the only document in the file with a timestamp tied to a specific increment rather than to a visit date weeks later.
One worked pass
Six push piers on a rear bay, lift running under an accepted plan targeting 1.0 in of recovery. At 0.50 in cumulative the interior watcher calls a crack opening at the top of a door frame in the dining room, a wall the pre-condition record shows as unmarked. Step 1 holds pressure flat across all six cylinders; no dust or debris is falling, so the room is entered from the side rather than backed out entirely.
Step 2 traces the crack along the top of the door casing into the wall above, which carries a header spanning the opening. That places it as structural rather than finish, and the record says so rather than defaulting to the easier answer. Step 3 reads 0.8 mm at the widest point, photographed with a comparator card, located four feet from bracket 3, cumulative lift 0.50 in.
Step 4 sends the package to the design professional and holds bracket 3. The written answer comes back inside two hours: this reads as normal stress redistribution over a header at this stage of a lift on a structure of this age, resume bracket 3 in 0.10 in increments rather than the standard 0.25, and watch the same crack at each one. Step 5 clears the other five brackets to continue on the standard schedule, since they sit on an independent zone of the manifold per the design professional's note.
Step 6 is where this pass has its failure. Before resuming bracket 3, the lift lead re-measures the crack: 1.6 mm, doubled from the 0.8 mm hold reading, with a thin line of fresh dust at the top corner of the casing that was not there an hour earlier. That is further opening since the hold reading, and under step 6's stop rule the written clearance is cancelled. The bracket goes back to step 4 rather than resuming on an email that was true when it was written and is not true anymore.
The second round-trip, now carrying the doubled reading, comes back with a revised instruction: hold bracket 3 permanently at 0.50 in, complete the other five brackets to target, and schedule a follow-up site visit before any further work at that location. Step 7 disclosure goes out that afternoon, naming the held bracket and the reason in plain terms rather than folding it into the day's summary. Step 8 closes the dining room's restricted access once the design professional's follow-up visit confirms no further movement two weeks later, which is the point the room actually gets used normally again rather than the point the crew left the house.
