Content Manipulation and Pack-Out Technique for a Standard Loss
Why this matters
Most residential losses never see a warehouse. A standard Cat 1 or Cat 2 job keeps its contents in the house, moved a few feet off wet flooring and blocked up out of the drying chamber, and returned to their spots the same day the equipment comes down. The job goes wrong in the same handful of ways every time: a table leg left sitting on wet carpet pad wicks a rust or tannin stain into the wood that no amount of drying will pull back out, a wet phone charger gets plugged back in before anyone checks it, or a dresser gets dragged across a subfloor that was too soft to trust. This article is the physical technique for moving, blocking, and lightly packing contents on that standard job. Deciding what moves and what stays
Not every item in the room needs to leave it. An item on hard, unaffected flooring outside the wet footprint stays exactly where it is. An item sitting inside the wet footprint, or close enough that air-mover placement or foot traffic will disturb it, gets one of three treatments: blocked and elevated in place if it is not sensitive to airflow and dust, relocated to an unaffected room in the same house if the drying work will expose it to demolition dust or direct airflow, or lightly packed for off-site handling if it needs cleaning, evaluation, or specialty care the room cannot provide. Which category an item falls into by contamination level and porosity is the selection reference's job, not this one; assume that call has already been made and this is how you execute it. The decision to move an item is not free: every relocation is a chain-of-custody event, so do not shuffle contents around for convenience without noting where they went.
The rule: nothing you are drying sits on what you are drying
State the gate plainly, because it is the one rule this entire article exists to enforce: every leg, base, or point of contact between an item and wet flooring or wet subfloor gets isolated at setup, before the first air mover runs, not added later as a punch-list item. Isolation means a moisture-break material appropriate to the item, plastic film or wax paper under a finished wood leg, a solid block under a metal or upholstered base, never bare wood or bare metal resting directly on a wet surface for the duration of a drying cycle that runs multiple days. An item that cannot be practically isolated in place, because it is too low to the floor or too heavy to block safely, gets relocated instead. There is no middle option where an item sits unprotected because moving it seemed like more trouble than it was worth; that shortcut is where the damage comes from.
Blocking and elevating technique by material
Wood furniture legs get a moisture-break, foil, wax paper, or a plastic square, between the leg and the wet surface, then a rigid block or furniture riser under that to lift the full weight clear of standing moisture and airflow-driven wicking. Upholstered furniture gets the same leg treatment, plus cushions pulled and stood on edge rather than left flat, so trapped moisture in the cushion foam has somewhere to evaporate to instead of sitting against the frame. Metal-legged furniture is a rust risk specifically, not a generic wet-material risk, so treat direct contact with wet carpet or a wet subfloor as a near-certain corrosion event and block it the same as wood rather than assuming metal can tolerate a few days of contact because it will not swell or stain the way wood does. Books, boxes, and stacked porous goods get lifted onto a dry shelf or pallet rather than blocked in place; a stack of books blocked an inch off wet carpet still wicks moisture up through its own base if left long enough, so relocate rather than block anything that porous.
Lift and carry technique
Two people lift anything heavier than one person can control without twisting at the waist, and the lift itself follows the same rule on every job: bend at the knees, keep the load close to the body, and pivot with the feet rather than twisting the spine under load. Clear a path before you pick anything up, not while carrying it; tripping over a cord or a piece of demoed material while carrying a dresser is how a minor lift becomes an injury and a broken item at the same time. Before you step onto or set weight down on any section of flooring you have not already walked, check it: a subfloor that has been standing in water for more than a day can feel solid underfoot and still not hold a two-person carry with a heavy piece balanced on it. If a floor section feels spongy or gives underfoot when you test it, then stop and do not carry weight across it; reroute the carry path around that section or set the item down and reassess before continuing, even if it means a longer route to the door.
One rule, two outcomes on the same job
A living room and a dining room in the same house both flood from the same upstairs supply-line failure, Cat 1 water, and both rooms get air movers and a dehumidifier running the same afternoon. In the living room, the crew blocks every leg of a wood console table and a fabric sofa with foil and rigid risers at setup, before the equipment goes on, and stands the sofa cushions on edge against the wall. Three days later, when the flooring is verified dry and the blocking comes out, the console table and sofa show no staining and no telegraphed marks where the blocking sat. In the dining room, a solid-wood table with a dark finish gets pushed a few feet to the side to clear space for an air mover, but its four legs are left sitting directly on the wet carpet pad because the crew judged the move as good enough and never circled back to block it. By day two, a distinct rust-colored ring has bled up into the finish around each leg, tannin and rust migrating out of the wet pad into the wood grain. The table now needs refinishing that was never part of the original scope, from the identical rule applied in one room and skipped in the other.
Relocating items out of the chamber
When an item is relocating to an unaffected room rather than staying in place, protect the receiving room before the item arrives: lay a moisture-break barrier or a clean tarp on the floor where the item will sit, especially for anything still damp on its underside, so a relocated item does not create a second wet footprint in a room that was never part of the loss. Wrap or bag items that are visibly wet separately from dry items during the short carry; a wet lamp base set directly against a dry box in transit can transfer enough moisture to soften cardboard or stain a finish before either item reaches its destination. Log where each relocated item went, in writing, at the moment you move it, not from memory at the end of the day; a light on-the-spot relocation still needs to reconcile back to the same room it started in when the job closes, and the inventory and chain-of-custody procedure for anything leaving the property entirely is a separate standard, not a step to improvise here.
Wet electronics and contact beyond a standard loss
Never power on, plug in, or test any electronic item that got wet, a lamp, a charger, a small appliance, regardless of how dry it looks on the outside; unplug it at the source, tag it clearly as untested and wet-affected, and route it to a qualified electronics technician for inspection before anyone re-energizes it. Internal moisture can bridge a circuit and cause a fire or a shock well after the visible surface looks dry, so "it looks fine" is not a test. If, while handling contents, you find staining, odor, or residue consistent with sewage or blackwater contact on an item you expected to be a standard Cat 1 or Cat 2 loss, then stop handling that item with standard technique and route it to the category 3 contents procedure instead; do not clean, block, or relocate a blackwater-contacted item using the technique in this article, because the contamination handling requirements are a different scope entirely.
Verifying before you close the room
Before the job is called complete, confirm every isolation you opened has a matching close. Every item that was blocked gets its blocking removed only after the flooring underneath is verified dry, and the item gets checked at that point, not assumed clean, for any staining or telegraphed mark where the blocking sat. Every item that was relocated gets returned to its logged original position, or its new position gets confirmed and recorded as final if the customer prefers it stay. Every wet electronic item stays tagged and untested until a qualified inspection clears it; removing that tag without an inspection report on file is not a shortcut, it is reopening a hazard you already isolated. Walk the room a final time specifically looking for anything still resting on a moisture-break block that should have come out days earlier; leaving a permanent blocking material under a piece of furniture as if it were finished is a loose end the customer will notice before you do.
