Hard Water Etching Discovered Mid-Clean - The Response Standard

Purpose

This SOP guarantees that when a normal cleaning pass reveals a haze that will not clear with standard product and technique, the response is confirm and classify before any escalated chemistry or a restoration conversation happens, so a customer never concludes the crew made their glass worse over damage that was there before the visit started and that ordinary cleaning was never going to remove. Etching and removable hard-water deposit look nearly identical from a few feet away and behave completely differently once you actually work them, chase the wrong one with the wrong method and the shop either wastes the visit or, worse, tries an escalated chemical on glass that was never confirmed safe for it.

Scope

Covers the discovery of a haze that does not respond to standard cleaning during a routine visit, from the moment standard technique fails through classification, disclosure, and the decision to stop, refer, or scope a separate restoration visit. It does not cover the wet-test diagnostic method itself or the acid and mechanical-polish chemistry used to actually restore deposit or light etch, both owned in full by the hard-water etch-versus-deposit reference on this shelf, this SOP's step 2 routes into that reference directly rather than restating its chemistry section. It does not cover a full restoration project once quoted and scheduled as its own job, that project follows the reference's own customer-documentation and chemistry sections start to finish; this SOP ends at the disposition, not the restoration work itself. It does not cover using hydrofluoric acid or any other aggressive restoration chemistry during a routine cleaning visit under any circumstances, that chemistry does not leave the truck on a stop that was not scoped and staffed for it.

The procedure

  1. Stop at the standard product and technique the moment a haze fails to respond to a normal pass, and do not escalate before classifying it. No extra pressure, no repeated passes, and no swapped-in stronger product before the wet test runs. Acceptance: nothing beyond the shop's standard glass cleaner has touched that pane before step 2 produces a classification. Wrong looks like grinding harder with the same pad or reaching for whatever acidic product happens to be in the van, exactly the kind of untested chemical contact that can strip or cloud a coating the tech has not yet confirmed is bare glass. Stop rule: if an escalated product has already gone on before the tech realizes it is not clearing, stop entirely, note in the record that a product was applied before classification, and run the wet test on the glass as it now stands. Hazard: an unconfirmed acidic or abrasive product on a coated surface, low-e, tinted, or mirrored, can strip or cloud the coating in the time it takes to notice, so nothing beyond standard product goes on until the glass type and coating side are confirmed, and if that cannot be confirmed on-site, no escalated product goes on today regardless of how convinced the tech is it will work.

  2. Run the wet test per the etch-versus-deposit reference and classify: deposit, etch, or mixed. Wet the haze with clean water, wait several seconds, and check under raking light, deposit nearly disappears wet, etch stays visibly hazy either way. Acceptance: a stated classification with a wet-and-dry photo pair as evidence. Wrong looks like skipping straight to "that's just hard water" without wetting it, the fastest way to promise a customer a clean result that etched glass can never actually deliver. Stop rule: if the glass is tempered, an etched corner mark confirms it, or the haze sits on the interior pane of a sealed unit with no exterior access, stop the classification conversation at "this needs a professional look," neither of those configurations gets carried toward a restoration quote, both sit on the reference's own walk-away list. Hazard: the same coating exposure from step 1 applies here, the wet test itself uses only water, but confirming glass type before any next step still matters, since a customer hearing "deposit" may expect the crew to try harder today with product the coating cannot safely take.

  3. Photograph the wet-and-dry pair and the affected area's location before moving on. Acceptance: a legible photo pair exists showing the difference, or the lack of one, between wet and dry. Wrong looks like one dry photo with a verbal note "looked like etching," which proves nothing if the classification is disputed later. Stop rule: none, this step always completes once step 2 has a result. Hazard: none.

  4. Disclose to the customer on-site, before leaving, in plain terms. Explain deposit versus etch, that etch is permanent glass damage from years of exposure, not something today's visit caused, and that ordinary cleaning was never going to remove it. Acceptance: the customer has heard the classification and seen the photo pair before the crew departs. Wrong looks like a vague invoice note, "haze remains," with no explanation, which invites the customer to assume the crew simply did not try hard enough. Stop rule: if the customer pushes back and insists the crew made it worse, walk them to an adjacent, unaffected pane cleaned with the same technique in the same visit as a direct comparison, if the identical method did not haze that pane, the haze on this one predates the squeegee. Hazard: none, this step is a conversation, conducted with the tools already set down per step 1.

  5. Complete the rest of that pane's cleanable surface normally, resuming the work paused in step 1. Clean the reachable, removable soil as usual; only the haze itself is out of scope for today. Acceptance: the reachable surface is cleaned to the same standard as the rest of the job. Wrong looks like skipping the whole pane because part of the haze will not move. Stop rule: none. Hazard: standard product only for the rest of that pane, the classification in step 2 confirmed what is safe, it did not open the door to anything stronger.

  6. Offer the disposition per the reference's own walk-away criteria and log the answer. For deposit or light, non-tempered etch within the reference's accepted coverage range, quote a separate restoration visit. For tempered glass, heavy etch coverage, or inner-pane damage on a sealed unit, refer to a glazier. Acceptance: a stated path with a next step logged, quote sent, glazier name shared, or "no economical fix, customer informed." Wrong looks like promising a restoration outcome on the spot without running the reference's coverage-percentage and glass-type checks first, the fastest way to end up quoting polish work on tempered glass and either backing out later or scratching a customer's pane trying it. Stop rule: if the coverage or glass-type check has not actually been run, no restoration figure goes to the customer today, that conversation waits for the office to confirm it against the reference, and if the office cannot confirm it within a couple of business days, the customer gets a status update rather than silence while the file sits open. Hazard: none, this step is a referral decision, the chemistry and mechanical-polish hazards belong to the restoration visit itself, not to today's stop.

The record this produces

  • Classification: deposit, etch, or mixed, and the wet-versus-dry photo pair it was read against.
  • Location: the affected pane and the extent of coverage observed.
  • Disclosure: who was told, how, and when, including any comparison-pane demonstration used.

A haze that gets a shrug and no record is the shop's word against the customer's memory the day they call asking why "the spot the cleaners saw" is still there.

One run of this standard, filled in

A one-time residential job, ground-floor sliding door glass, a haze concentrated along the bottom third where a sprinkler head has been overspraying for years.

  • Step 1: the standard glass cleaner and a normal squeegee pass do not touch the haze. The tech stops rather than reaching for a stronger product, and moves to the wet test. Pass.
  • Step 2: wetting the haze and checking under raking light shows it stays visibly hazy wet, unchanged from dry, classified etch. The glass shows no tempered corner mark and is a single pane, not a sealed unit, so it stays on the table for a restoration quote rather than routing straight to a glazier referral.
  • Step 3: under time pressure with rain moving in, the tech takes a single dry photo of the haze and moves on to finish the rest of the door. Fail. The acceptance calls for a wet-and-dry pair; only the dry half exists. Stop rule taken once noticed back at the truck: the tech returns to the pane, re-wets the same section, and takes the wet-condition photo before packing up, completing the pair the record requires.
  • Step 4: the homeowner is present. The tech explains deposit versus etch, shows the completed photo pair, and demonstrates on an adjacent unaffected pane cleaned with the same technique moments earlier, no haze appears there.
  • Step 5: the rest of the sliding door's reachable surface is cleaned normally; the etched band is left alone.
  • Step 6: coverage is estimated at roughly a fifth of the pane's visible area, well within the reference's restoration range, and the glass is confirmed non-tempered. A restoration quote is offered; the homeowner accepts, and a separate visit is scheduled, logged in the file with the quote reference.

The single dry photo in step 3 would have been enough to remember what the haze looked like, but not enough to prove the classification if the homeowner later disputed it, dry alone looks identical whether the cause is deposit or etch. The wet half of the pair is the only frame that actually carries the diagnosis.
